To dress with style, there are a few rules to follow, and the main one is: the combination of colors.
Indeed, even if you have found the clothes with the style and cut that suit you, if their colors do not coordinate, they will never be worn together.
Here are some tips to help you harmonize the colors of your outfit.
Basic rules
To begin, you must have these 2 main principles in mind:
Favor dark colors for the bottom and lighter, “flash” colors for the top, to bring light to the face.
Combine 2 to 3 colors maximum across your entire outfit, accessories included, and play with 1 dominant color and 1 to 2 secondary colors; we can of course add “neutral” shades such as black, white, beige, gray or even silver.
If you don’t feel too comfortable in combining colors, the safest thing is to start with a rather neutral tone and combine it with a present color in small touches.
Combinations that work
To help you associate colors, the color circle, or “color wheel,” is the ideal tool. It allows you to understand which colors go together.
The color wheel is made up of the 3 primary colors (Red, Yellow and Blue) , 3 secondary colors obtained from the primary colors (Orange, Green and Violet) and 6 tertiary colors, resulting from the mixture between primary and secondary colors.
There are 3 main types of color combinations that work every time:
Complementary colors
These colors are arranged opposite each other on the color wheel; for example, the complementary color of Blue is Orange, that of Yellow is Violet, and that of Red is Green. Used together these colors create a harmonious contrast.
The monochrome
In this case, it is a question of choosing only one color and playing with the different shades of this shade in your outfit and your accessories.
Similar colors
In this last harmony, the colors are very close, such as, for example, yellow and light green, or red and brick orange. This involves choosing a color and associating it with the one (s) located right next to it on the color wheel.
This color gradient can be seen as being close to a monochrome, but with more richness and pep for the eye.
Here are some examples of color combinations that are sure to work:
Electric Blue with Dark Yellow, Brown, Gray
Duck Blue with Dark Red, Dark Orange, Brown
Turquoise Blue with Fuchsia Pink, Dark Purple, Brown, Beige
Yellow with Blue, Purple, Brown, Black, Gray
Orange with Blue, Yellow, Green, Brown, Gray
Fuchsia Pink with Turquoise Blue, Chocolate, Gray
Pale Pink with Dark Green, pastel colors
Red with Dark Blue, Green, Black, Gray
Green with Red, Orange, Brown
Colors and personality
The color used in one’s clothes is a way of talking about oneself, of expressing one’s personality.
Generally speaking, the colors of our clothes are a kind of mirror of our mood. They are divided into 2 categories, warm colors and cold colors.
Warm colors evoke dynamism, energy, liveliness, joy.
Cold colors, for their part, reflect a calm, peaceful, serene mood and temperament, more focused on oneself.
And if, despite these various tips, you still don’t feel confident in your ability to manage colors, rely on accessories!
