Maintaining dry hair can be a real hassle. Whether they are short or long, the story is the same. A single unsuitable product or bad habits can trigger a vicious cycle.
If you have dry hair, you should adopt the right hair routine. In this article, we give you our best tips for building a routine that will take care of your hair, strengthen it and make it shine.
Dry hair: avoid heat
For dry hair, there is one element to ban from your hair routine: heat. This is valid for exposure to the sun, whose UV rays dry out the hair fiber. If you have to expose yourself to the sun, you will need to apply a hair oil with UV filters. You can also wear a hat to maintain the health of your hair.
Maintaining dry hair
But dry hair especially hates the heat of styling appliances like hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons. If you have short hair, choose natural drying. If you still have to use a hair dryer, we recommend an ionic model, which will protect dry hair and avoid static electricity.
A model offering several temperature settings will be a good choice. So you can choose a low temperature. Before drying them, comb them gently starting at the ends and working up towards the roots.
Before shampooing, oil bath
To nourish dry hair, an important step is the oil bath. A step which must necessarily take place before shampooing since it will be necessary to rinse well to get rid of this product.
Giving your hair an oil bath simply means coating it with vegetable oil. By integrating the oil bath into your routine, your hair will be less dry but also more supple and shinier. If you have tangled, brittle and/or dull hair, it is in your best interest to use an oil bath. Because vegetable oils contain fatty acids, vitamins and carotenoids which will nourish your hair.
Frequency and installation time of the oil bath
If you have very dry hair, we advise you to do an oil bath once a week. Otherwise, one or two oil baths per month are enough to nourish naturally dry hair. Also, you can increase the frequency of your oil baths in summer if you expose yourself to the sun, which will dry them out even more.
Hair oil bath
You may also be wondering how long to leave this famous oil bath for. Well, this will depend on the time you have and may therefore vary from time to time. The recommended minimum is still one hour, so that the oil can really penetrate the hair and nourish it.
If you can, leave the oil bath on overnight. In this case, don’t forget to cover your hair or place a towel on your pillow to avoid greasy stains.
The oil bath in practice
Let’s get practical: how to make an oil bath.
If you have thick or long hair, start by parting your hair and combing it.
Then apply the vegetable oil to your hair, strand by strand. Your hair should not be dripping with oil but just look a little greasy. That’s when you’ll know you’ve applied the right amount.
Start at the roots, work your way down the lengths and finish at the ends. You can put a larger dose on the ends if they are brittle. If you have long hair, you can wear it in a bun or tie it up. In any case, you can wrap your hair in a towel or cellophane paper to allow the oil to penetrate better.
